15th Nov Update - Woodford Glen Eagles shock Tigers - By Mat Kermeen
The TTL Hire Woodford Glen Eagles Super-Stock team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the clubs history by defeating the highly rated Nelson Tigers in Nelson on Saturday night.
The depleted Eagles were virtually written off. Few would have given them any chance of winning the much sort after McCall trophy which was possibly a key ingredient to their success.
“I think Nelson definitely under estimated us and that was great motivation for our boys, we talked about the fact that we had nothing to lose,” said Eagles assistant manager Paul Dumelow.
Veteran driver Peter Field who was making a return to teams racing for the first time in “a good ten years” backed up Dumelow’s sentiments believing the Eagles were “written off by everybody including the Nelson Tigers.”
Ironically Nelson loan driver Ricky Boulton started off the front for the Eagles but Nick Selfe had the honour of taking the chequered flag.
Team’s races are a first past the post winner takes all format so stopping opposition drivers is often the key, as shown by the Eagles who knew they couldn’t compete with the speed of the Nelson cars.
Selfe, who had the drive of his life, spun around current New Zealand Champion Dale Ewers which put him off the pace. However the turning point came when Shane Anderton took the race leader Nelson’s Shane Harwood to the wall which allowed Selfe to pounce and never look back.
As the laps counted down Boulton, Anderton and Field were superb in protecting Selfe from the attacks of Nelson drivers and dealt out some crunching hits in the process having no thoughts of self preservation for body or car.
Field described the win as “a huge buzz” and possibly the highlight of his 34 year racing career but was more pleased with what they had done for the city.
“We showed that Christchurch has got real heart despite the earthquakes and everything that’s been happening in the city. We proved if you have heart a team of nobody’s can beat a team of champions,” he said.
The Glen Eagles will face what’s sure to be a fired up Tigers team when they travel to AmPro Tools Woodford Glen Speedway for the return fixture this Saturday.
